13 Beach Makeup Products That Will Actually Stay Put

beach makeup products

When spending a day at the beach (or when visiting on vacation), it’s crucial that you wear makeup products that protect your skin from uv rays. It’s also important that said products can withstand the seaside elements, whether that’s heat, humidity, or a dip in the water.

While there are tons of long-lasting makeup finds out there, it can be tricky to find products that actually hold up during a day at the beach. Plus, I know firsthand that going sans makeup can leave you feeling a little bit “naked.”

To help you prep for your next beach vacay, I’m sharing a handful of products that pass the quality test when it comes to increased exposure to the sun. Below, find my tried-and-true beach makeup products that will make you feel confident while protecting your skin—whether you’re lounging in the sand or paddle boarding with your very own activity guy (IYKYK.)

p.s. Heading on a trip and need a complete beach vacation packing list? I have you covered in this post.

13 Beach Makeup Products

Clé de Peau Beauté Cream SPF

I’m not going to sugar coat it, this sunscreen is a major splurge. However, it’s totally worth the investment if you plan on spending a good chunk of time at the beach.

This broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays while providing a whopping 10 hours worth of moisture. From personal use, I’d describe it more as a luxe moisturizer or face cream than a traditional SPF.

It doesn’t leave a white cast like so many other sunscreens do, and it also doesn’t feel filmy or sticky. Another perk is that it promotes a firmer, more smooth skin texture while providing sun protection, so you’re really getting high quality skincare mixed with your daily SPF.

Shiseido Sunscreen Stick

In the market for a more affordable sunscreen? Try this one, which has been a go-to of mine for years now. Like I mentioned above, most sunscreens are known to leave behind a thick white cast (especially the stick versions), but that’s definitely not an issue you’ll run into with this one.

It’s a great choice for beach wear because it’s water resistant (up to 80 minutes.) You can also use it on both your face and your body, making it easy to pack just one sunscreen option.

I also appreciate that it’s hydrating, which makes applying makeup on top a total breeze.

Merit Great Skin Glow Serum

After applying your moisturizer and SPF for the day, add a couple pumps of this serum to your skin. It’s ultra-hydrating and leaves your complexion with a glowy and dewy look, which is ideal for a beach day.

The serum is lightweight and contains both niacinamide (a calming ingredient) and hyaluronic acid (known for its hydrating benefits.) It also works to plump your skin while improving dullness and uneven texture. I’ve also found that if you apply this before makeup, it helps it glide on more smoothly.

Tower 28 SunnyDays SPF Foundation

Wearing a heavy duty foundation while spending time at the beach probably isn’t necessary. This product feels more like a skin tint while still providing great coverage that’s long lasting. In fact, this SPF foundation is one of my favorite Sephora finds of all time.

It’s lightweight and glides onto your skin smoothly yet covers up imperfections like dark spots and redness. I also love that it doesn’t get oily throughout the day, which is essential when you’re already dealing with the heat.

Other highlights: It comes in a large variety of shades to complement many skin tones, it’s under $35 (for a tube that will last a long time), and it has SPF 30 in it.

Rare Beauty Liquid Blush

This liquid blush has some serious staying power, which is exactly why it landed a spot on this list. It’s also a good choice for beach days because it’s buildable and easy to blend, meaning you can go for a really natural and “barely there” look.

It comes in many shades, including some that have a matte finish. Plus, you can actually purchase it in a mini size, which is nice to have on hand when you’re traveling.

Soleil Toujours Setting Spray

A setting spray is a nonnegotiable when wearing makeup at the beach. After all, you don’t want to spend time on your look if it’s just going to slough off throughout the day. With that being said, a lot of setting sprays can feel like a complete waste—either because they don’t make a difference or because they make you feel oily.

This one does exactly what it promises: sets your makeup so it stays in place, but with the added bonus of containing both SPF and hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

Ciele Bronzing Contour Stick

It’s rare to come across a bronzer that offers sun protection, yet this find provides just that. In fact, all of the products created by this brand contain SPF, making it easy to add their full lineup to your makeup bag and feel confident that you’ll be caring for your skin in the process.

I also think cream bronzers are superior to powder bronzers when hanging at the beach (since they give you a dewier look.)

This bronzing contour stick is widely loved, and reviewers note that it’s “so easy to use” and that it leaves you with “the prettiest bronze” color—no sun tanning needed.

Cay Skin SPF Lip Balm

Lip balm is an obvious must when hanging out at the beach. Because of the warm temperatures, the skin on your lips can get particularly dry and chapped. To combat this, try to apply (and reapply) a quality lip gloss, oil, or balm throughout your time on the sand.

I love that this one isn’t sticky and that it’s offered in clear as well as tinted options.

Caliray Come Hell or High Water Mascara

While all of the products in this post are worthy of a spot in your makeup bag, Caliray might be the one brand that’s essentially made to be worn on the beach. The brand was co-founded by a surfer (who also co-founded Urban Decay.) She wanted to create a waterproof mascara that would actually stay put even if you’re spending time being active in the ocean.

This tubing mascara is one of my personal faves—even though I admittedly do not spend much time in the ocean. It’s perfectly pigmented, gives you a dramatic amount of length, and swipes onto each little lash with ease.

Caliray Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil

I personally would skip eyeliner when headed to the beach, but if you really want to go all out with your waterside look, you do you! Like I mentioned above, this brand was co-founded by a surfer, so the products they create are made to withstand an afternoon near the sea.

This eyeliner pencil is considered to be “surf proof” since it has waterproof wear and is known to stay in place—yes, even if you’re submerged in water.

As far as application goes, it glides on easily and can be smudged if you’re looking for a more lived-in vibe. Color options include navy, brown, and black.

Supergoop! Glow Screen

In a hurry to head to the beach? Simplify your makeup routine by using this tinted sunscreen in place of a skin tint or foundation. It’s both glowy and hydrating, while also leaving skin with coverage that’s just right for a day spent outside. You could also layer other products on top of this if you want more coverage.

One downside is that this doesn’t come in very many shades.

Charlotte Tilbury Highlighter Wand

If you’re not getting a dose of color from the sun (because who wants wrinkles), add a few dots of this highlighter to your cheekbones. It comes in the prettiest rose and rose gold shades and can actually be worn as a highlighter, blush, or both.

A little bit goes go a long way and I like that it comes with a built-in applicator, which makes the process of blending totally seamless.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush-On SPF

Need to reapply your sunscreen throughout your day at the beach? This brush-on sunscreen makes that process easy since it’s powdered and tinted. I’ve been using this for years and couldn’t swear by it more—it’s worth every single penny.
