Here’s Exactly How To Pack Jewelry For Travel

how to pack jewelry for travel

With the amount of travel I do each year (a lot), I’ve had to learn how to pack strategically. I know firsthand that it can be a major challenge to fit all of your necessities into one suitcase, regardless of where you’re going or how long you’ll be gone. I mean a girls gotta have options, right?

One thing that’s particularly tough to pack is jewelry — and I’m often asked for my hacks for toting it along on trips.

Honestly, I’ve always been more of a minimalist when it comes to jewelry, but I do know that it offers up the perfect way to tie an outfit together. Whenever I travel, I always pack basic gold hoops, a few dainty necklaces, and my rings. They go with every type of outfit and are appropriate for any setting or occasion.

When packing jewelry, it’s not as simple as just throwing it all into little plastic bags. Jewelry is delicate, meaning it can easily get tangled and damaged if you’re not careful. Using travel jewelry cases can obviously help keep your pieces safe and protected, but it can be overwhelming to pick just one.

In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly how to pack jewelry for travel, including creative yet practical ways to get your accessories from point A to point B.

How To Pack Jewelry For Travel

One thing you don’t want to do when it comes to packing jewelry? Throw it all inside a toiletry bag, even if you have the best toiletry bag on the block. Here’s what to do instead — so you ensure your gems get to your final destination in one (untangled) piece.

Invest in good-quality organizers.

Whether you’re super into bracelets or you mostly wear rings, there’s certainly an organizer out there for your favorite type of jewelry. There are a variety of designs that make it easy to travel with jewelry, and most of these organizers don’t take up much suitcase space. Round, square, rectangular, and rolled jewelry organizers are all relatively easy to find — and another perk is that they’re all available at affordable price points.

Roll necklaces in microfiber cloth.

It’s always so frustrating to find that your jewelry is a tangled mess when you arrive at your destination. One way to prevent this is by rolling your necklaces in a microfiber cloth. This creates separation from other jewelry and allows each necklace to remain straight and flat during a flight. It’s simple, effective, and doesn’t cost a penny!

Thread thin bracelets and necklaces through straws.

This is another great way to keep your necklaces tangle-free while you’re on the go. It might seem tacky, but it’s a smart method if you’re in a bind and don’t have other options. No travel jewelry case to bring along on your trip? Straws will do the trick.

Store small pieces of jewelry in pill organizers.

Another way to keep your jewelry items organized is by using a pill case to store them. This is especially great for small pieces, like stud earrings, rings, or thin bracelets. Simply place them in separate pill organizer compartments to keep things streamlined.

Wear your most important jewelry.

While there are many ways to travel with jewelry, a good rule of thumb is to never stash any pieces that are of high value or importance inside your suitcase. Think about it: It would be a major bummer to lose your luggage that has expensive jewelry inside — honestly, it would probably ruin your trip.

To avoid this, wear your best pieces while flying or pack your jewelry in a carry on bag so you can keep track of it at all times.

You can even pack and wear summer jewelry on beach travel vacations or a girls trip.

And not to be a broken record, but be sure to always, always, always wear your most valuable and sentimental pieces on the plane. No one wants to lose jewelry — especially when it’s worth a lot. Safe travels!
