How to Style a Trench Coat 6 Ways

One year-round wardrobe staple that’s highly underestimated? A classic trench coat.

While this specific piece of outerwear was originally designed to be worn in windy and rainy conditions, it has proven to be a chic piece of clothing that can add a finishing touch to a variety of outfits.

Trench coats not only offer a sophisticated and effortless look, but they’re also really practical to wear from season to season. They’re comfy, lightweight, and can serve as a pretty focal point of an outfit—what’s not to love?

Whether you’re new to incorporating a trench into your styling routine or you’re simply looking for ways to switch things up, I’m hopeful that this roundup will leave you with lots of ideas.

How to Style a Trench Coat 6 Ways

With Jeans + a T-Shirt + Sneakers

In my opinion, this is the OG casual trench coat outfit. This would be a great one to start with if you’re at all intimidated by styling a trench because it’s pretty hard to mess up.

While this happens to be the perfect outfit to wear during the spring, depending on where you live, this might be a good year-round look (here’s to looking at you, Californians!)

Any style of jeans would work with this look, but I’m a fan of this specific pair as well as this one. And if you need some sneaker recs, I have you covered.

With Leather Leggings + a Sweater + Boots

This is what I refer to as my “winter NYC uniform” because it’s ideal for wearing around the city in unfavorable weather. A leather leggings outfit is easy to throw on and uses just a few wardrobe staples while still offering a cute look.

I am a big fan of leather leggings for the obvious reason that they’re comfortable, but I also think they bring an elevated look to winter outfits. I also like that they give me an excuse to wear something other than jeans when it’s cold outside.

To replicate this outfit (which you can see in the first image of this post), slip into your go-to pair of leather leggings, add a black turtleneck or sweater, and finish with knee high boots.

p.s. If you’re in the market for a pair of knee high boots, these are my absolute favorite. I love them so much that I dedicated an entire blog post to them.

With a Sweater Dress + Tights + Boots

A sweater dress with tights and boots is the ultimate holiday-ready look (or just a good go-to in the fall and winter.) Add a trench coat on top for extra warmth.

A classic tan trench can also break up your outfit if you’re going the monochromatic route, like wearing a black sweater dress with black tights and boots.

This outfit is undeniably chic yet is super comfortable and great for a variety of occasions, whether you’re going to dinner with friends or meeting a co-worker for coffee.

With Leggings + a Crewneck + Sneakers

There is no better cool-weather travel outfit than this combo right here. A basic pair of black leggings, a comfy and oversized crewneck, white sneakers, and a trench coat = the ideal outfit choice for rainy morning airport runs.

Instead of a crewneck, you could also go with a half-zip sweater, which is a classic closet staple and a great layering piece. I feel like half-zips often look a bit more polished than a crewneck since they tend to be more fitted, so this is a good option if you’re going for a more put-together look. But, as always, comfort is key (especially when you’re traveling.)

With Wide Leg Pants + a Bodysuit + Sneakers

I’m admittedly obsessed with bodysuits because of how versatile they are—you can wear them throughout all seasons, they go with basically every type of bottoms, and they can easily be dressed up or down. They also happen to work wonderfully with a trench coat.

I’d pair a bodysuit with wide leg pants and sneakers for a laid back yet trendy look. You could go with wide leg jeans, cargo pants, or trousers depending on your personal style and the occasion.

With Jeans + a Button-Down Top + Loafers

For a more professional look, try wearing a button-down top with jeans, loafers, and your favorite trench coat. This is another timeless yet simple outfit that’s sure to score you compliments every single time.

Loafers give off an upscale feel and a button-down blouse only adds to that vibe. Consider going with a crisp white button-down and tan loafers for a neutral, Parisian-inspired look. You can also opt for a pair of chunky loafers to give things a bit more personality.
