How to Style Sweatpants

how to style sweatpants

I am a summer girly through and through but there’s no denying that cooler weather and shorter days are just around the corner. This means one thing: I’ll be living in sweatpants.

Whether I’m working from home or catching a flight, sweatpants are one of my go-to clothing items. They’re a popular outfit choice for the obvious reason of being comfortable, but they’re also great because they’re easy to throw on for a variety of occasions.

They truly go with everything and you can seamlessly style them for different activities. Plus, with so many cute sweatpant options these days, they’re certainly appropriate for more than just lounging around the house.

If you’re trying to incorporate sweatpants into more of your outfits, this post will help you pull together a variety of comfy yet stylish looks.

How to Style Sweatpants

Choose fitted sweatpants.

If you don’t want to feel like you’re in full blown relaxation mode yet you want to feel cozy, fitted sweatpants offer a good in-between option. They make you feel put together enough to run errands, grab groceries, or take work calls.

These joggers from Vuori are one of my most frequently worn bottoms. Both the style and the fit are perfect for everyday wear. I typically pair them with a neutral tank, crop top, or a crewneck.

Pair them with a cashmere sweater.

When the weather is moody, I love to throw a cashmere sweater on with sweatpants. It’s the ultimate outfit to lounge around the house in. Whether you’re hosting a girls night in or you’re kicking back for a Netflix marathon, there’s nothing better to wear while unwinding.

Naadam is one of my go-to cashmere sweater brands, and they have a ton of cute staples for fall and winter. Their $75 sweater is a long-time best-seller and it comes in a variety of colors.

Go with a matching set.

I love a good matching set — especially when I come across a cute one on Amazon. The thing that I appreciate most about a matching sweatsuit set is that it takes all the guesswork out of planning an outfit. For that reason alone, it’s a no-brainer to wear while traveling (I’d consider it a must on a long-haul flight).

If you don’t like to look too matchy-matchy, this highly rated set is one of my best Amazon finds of all time. It’s also perfect for multiple seasons and weather types.

Wear them with sneakers.

White sneakers are the MVP of shoes and I honestly cannot imagine styling an outfit without them. Like sweatpants, they go with everything and are a practical option to wear for many occasions. If you plan to walk around a lot (like when you’re traveling), this is such a smart outfit choice.

If you want to replicate this exact look, this is the set I’m wearing and these sneakers are a #SilbSquad fave.

Throw a coat over a sweatsuit set.

A coat is a must-wear when the weather starts to get exceptionally chilly. However, that shouldn’t stop you from wearing a pair of sweatpants while out and about. You can easily slip a coat over your favorite pair, like I did when traveling last winter.

If you want even more inspo for how to style sweatpants, here are some of my favorite pairs, as well as some items to match them with.

Sweatsuit Sets

Again, there’s no easier outfit to pull together than a simple sweatsuit set. I’d suggest wearing white sneakers with one to keep things streamlined.

Cashmere Sweaters and Sweatpants

Regardless of what you pair one with, a cashmere sweater is an essential in every closet. Sweaters not only work with sweatpants, but they also look effortlessly chic with jeans.

Fitted Sweatpants and a T-Shirt

I will forever be purchasing fitted sweatpants from Vuori — I swear they are the best and they’re made with such great quality. I always wear mine with a white t-shirt or tank top. It creates a casual look but the fitted style makes you feel like you’re wearing “real” clothes rather than loungewear.

Sweatpants and Sneakers

White sneakers are another wardrobe staple that not only look good with sweatpants, but also with most things in a closet (I love wearing them with denim shorts and dresses).

You can style them with white sweats, but colored pants also look good with white shoes. For the most part, anything goes when it comes to pairing the two.
