What to Wear to a Summer Wedding: 25+ Summer Wedding Guest Dresses

what to wear to a summer wedding

When you think of summer, beach vacations, time by the pool, and being active outside might be the first few things that come to mind. However, if you’re anywhere between the mid-20s and late 30s range, you likely have a ton of weddings to attend during this time of the year.

By the new year, I don’t doubt that save the dates and invites begin to flood your mailbox. And while wedding season can certainly be a lot of fun (the open bar, the dancing, time with your friends), it can also be a bit stressful if you don’t know what to wear.

My best advice is to plan as far ahead as you can so you don’t get stuck buying a dress you don’t really love. Summertime weddings are the best in my opinion because the dress options are much more chic than they would be for a wedding in, let’s say, the dead of winter.

If you’re stumped on what to wear to a summer wedding, try pulling inspiration from the season. Bright and pastel colors are always a strong option, as well as floral prints and off the shoulder styles. Have fun with it and try to pick something that you can rewear for the next special event you attend.

I’ve done all the legwork (I know, I know, it’s a tough job) and rounded up some of the dresses I’ve been eyeing for the event season ahead. These summer wedding guest dresses are sure to be a hit regardless of the venue.

Silk Slip Dresses

When in doubt, go with a slip dress for a summer wedding. There are so many varieties of this style out there, and they’re all available at various price points. Plus, you could honestly find a slip dress in just about any color you want, making it easy to somewhat “personalize” your vibe. Some of my faves for summer are light green, yellow, blue, and pink.

The exact midi slip dress I’m wearing below is unfortunately very low in stock, but I’m sharing some similar options that can help you recreate the look.

Tie Strap Dresses

I recently wore this dress during a trip to France and I honestly think it’s the perfect wedding guest dress. I got so many compliments and love how classic and understated it is. It’s a piece you could easily wear for a black tie occasion but something you could also dress down if needed.

Tie strap dresses are ideal for summer weddings because they have somewhat of a spaghetti strap fit (keeping you cool in the heat.) I also just think the little ties add a fun and feminine feel. These dresses could also work for a spring, fall, or even a winter event (just add a cute shawl!)

I accessorized with this gold clutch and some dainty jewelry. Oh, and a printed dress would look equally as chic!

Black Midi Dresses

Another fool-proof wedding outfit? A black dress, which you may already have in your closet. Any length works, and will just depend on the venue and what you’re comfortable with. Anthropologie and Reformation always have a wide range of black dress options.

Style one with gold or silver accessories and black heels—simple yet timeless and effective.

Patterned Dresses

In the mood for something more fun? Patterned dresses are totally appropriate for a wedding as long as they aren’t too over the top or “loud.” I think any of these would look so cute for a backyard/outdoor event. Stripes, paisley prints, and florals are some good options—and remember that summer is the ideal time to wear a pop of color.

I’d pair a patterned dress with more minimalist finishes so you have a well-balanced look—think nude or acrylic heels and gold jewelry.

Polka Dot Dresses

I’m honestly not a big polka dot print gal, but that’s what makes the style fun to wear on a special occasion. The pattern isn’t necessarily reserved for summer wear, but look for options that are strapless or short sleeve.

I think smaller polka dot prints offer a more elevated vibe while bolder options are best for more laid back weddings.

Body Con Dresses

Would you believe me if I told you the dress I’m wearing below is from Amazon? It’s one of my favorite Amazon finds to date, and I’ve turned so many people on to this exact dress. Even though it’s form-fitting, it is insanely flattering and will earn you compliments every time you wear it.

I’d probably stick to wearing a body con dress to more casual weddings, whether it’s being held at a garden venue or on the beach. You could also get away with wearing a black body con dress to a fancier occasion—adding accessories and a clutch can help elevate your look.

Floral Print Dresses

Last but not least, floral print dresses are an obvious go-to for summer weddings. There is definitely no shortage of options out there, making it easy to find something that fits within your budget. I also think this is a good choice to wear to a wedding because you can rewear it for so many other occasions, like a bridal or baby shower, during a bachelorette, or even just for a nice dinner out.

Also, if you’re going to a beach wedding, there’s something about florals that seem the most fitting—especially on a flowy or wrap-style dress.
