Here’s Why I’m Obsessed with Makeup Artist-Founded Beauty Brands — and Why You Should Be Too.

The other day on Instagram I decided to share a screenshot of my most recent Sephora purchase history. Call it nosiness or pure curiosity — but I feel like there’s something kind of satisfying about getting a peek into what people have in their carts, you know?

As I scanned through the list, I noticed a decidedly prevalent theme: nearly every single makeup product I had purchased was from a makeup-artist-founded brand.

Over the past few years, I’ve definitely found myself drawn to products that were created by makeup artists. It started with Charlotte Tilbury and Pat McGrath (both of whom I’m still obsessed with) and has continued with newer brand founders, like Mario Dedivanovic and Patrick Ta.

And there’s one common thread among nearly every makeup-artist-founded brand: they make KILLER foundations. That should come as no surprise, considering these artists spent decades glamming the most notable faces in Hollywood before creating products of their own.

There are two MUA-founded foundations I’ve been using a lot lately, so I figured I’d share a bit about them here in case you’ve been in the market to try something new.

I’ll be honest—I’m usually more of a liquid foundation girlie, so I was initially hesitant about the idea of a creme foundation.

But then, of course, I was influenced. I watched a TikTok of Patrick doing Alix Earle’s makeup in her college apartment, and the way the product glided over her skin looked incredible. (If you haven’t seen the video, it’s hilarious.)

After trying it for myself, I can’t believe I ever doubted him. The foundation literally feels like butter. It’s SO smooth, SO creamy, and it gives you the most beautiful light-to-medium coverage.

I also love the compact that it comes in, and the fact that once you nail down your foundation shade, you’ve also taken the guesswork out of your powder shade too. I used the Shadefinder tool on the Sephora app and ended up nailing my shade on the first shot (Light 3.)

Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation

An equally amazing foundation for anyone who likes airbrushed-looking skin… Charlotte Tilbury’s Beautiful Skin Foundation.

This has actually been part of my rotation for a really long time, and I’ve always wondered why I hadn’t been seeing more people talk about it! (I truly think it’s because Flawless Filter steals all of the complexion attention.)

In any event—it’s an incredible product. It almost gives you the look of a skincare foundation… where you skin looks SUPER dewey, healthy, and glowy. If you have pigmentation, dark spots, acne, or imperfections, this foundation will also definitely help to blur that all out.

I especially love recommending Beautiful Skin Foundation to anyone who has dry skin, because it’s like a drink of water for your face. That said, if you’re oily or normal, you’ll want to set it with a light dusting of powder (unsurprisingly, CT makes a great one.)

I love this foundation so much that I literally own it in 3 shades—neutral 4, 5, and 6. Neutral 4 is what I typically use year-round when I’m not using a self-tanner.

Other Favorites

There are so many other incredible products from both Patrick Ta and Charlotte Tilbury that I could write an actual novel describing them all… but for the sake of your time, here are a few faves from each:

Patrick Ta:

  • Major Headlines Double-Take Crème & Powder Blush (She’s a Doll or She’s Blushing)
  • Precision Dual Ended Nose Brush
  • Major Brow Lamination Gel

Charlotte Tilbury:

  • Magic Serum with Vitamin C
  • Filmstar Bronze and Glow Contour Duo
  • Super Nudes Easy Eyeshadow Palette
